HIPHOPHUIS, REVOLT, AND JOHN106 ARE JOINING FORCES TO CELEBRATE THE 50TH BIRTHDAY OF HIP-HOP CULTURE. IT’S AN EPIC CELEBRATION MARKING A HISTORIC MOMENT. THE EXHIBITION CALLED CONTACT HIGH AT THE FERRO GASHOUDER TAKES US BACK TO THE ORIGINS OF THE ENERGY THAT HIP-HOP WAS BUILT UPON. GET READY FOR BLOCK PARTIES, FILMS, TALKS, AND SHOWS CURATED BY ROTTERDAM’S FINEST ARTISTS AND COLLECTIVES.
Since the 1980s, hip-hop has deeply influenced Rotterdam. It all started with kids and youngsters from the Bronx, NY, who created an art form that would become the most impactful youth culture in the world. Rotterdam has become a home to devoted hip-hop enthusiasts and innovators.
CONTACT HIGH offers visitors a unique perspective on the movement and the artists through the eyes of the photographers. It provides access to legendary photo shoots and rare material, allowing you to see the results firsthand.
This exhibition celebrates the photographers who played a critical role in showcasing hip-hop’s visual culture on a global stage. CONTACT HIGH: A Visual History of Hip-Hop offers an intimate look into the work of these photographers by presenting their unedited contact sheets, which serve as their personal diaries.
While the artists featured in CONTACT HIGH are primarily American, the story they represent has become universal and embraced by millions of young people around the world.

BEATS, RHYMES & LIFE: THE TRAVELS OF A TRIBE CALLED QUEST is a documentary film directed by Michael Rapaport about one of the most influential and groundbreaking musical groups in hip-hop history. Having released five gold and platinum selling albums within eight years, A Tribe Called Quest has been one of the most commercially successful and artistically significant musical groups in recent history, and regarded as iconic pioneers of hip hop. The band’s sudden break-up in 1998 shocked the industry and saddened the scores of fans, whose appetite for the group’s innovative musical stylings never seems to diminish.
